Two weeks after senior prom, Savannah Evans graduated Plainview High, and everything in her life catapulted into fast-forward. She learned Allie’s dedication to studies and college applications had earned her a broad range of schools to choose from, and she had ultimately decided on a prestigious university in the northeast. Which was a good thing, to be sure, but Savannah hated the idea of being separated from her friend…especially given that her own prospects were rather limited.

The plan had always been to attend Truman with Wes, but Wes was…well, different now.

He went by a different name. He had a girlfriend. He had moved into dorms. He wasn’t the same guy.

She missed that guy.

Not to say when she got to see him, he acted any different. Rather, Savannah supposed Wes seemed different because she knew so much about his private life. Stuff she hadn’t considered before he went to college or got a girlfriend or any of those things. However, ever since her conversation with Jeremy, Savannah had been hyperaware of her best friend in a way she never had before. If it weren’t for Paige, she figured she would have embarrassed herself by bringing up her sex life—or lack thereof—and asking Wes how he’d feel about being her first. Just as a favor, a way to get her virginity dealt with in a manner that would both rid her of it and make the experience itself memorable and special in its own right.

Because there was no one on earth she trusted more than Wes.

At least he’d be back for the summer. Back in his old house, in his old room. Maybe things would feel more or less normal with him just a few blocks away.

“You’re going to need my help, aren’t you?” Savannah asked the week before the planned move. She was in her room—the same room that had gone through numerous makeovers to accommodate the various stages of childhood and her interests. She tried to picture the room without her in it—with her living a few miles down the road in a strange place with a new strange schedule and a best friend on campus who liked spending his time between the thighs of a vapid airhead.

Her gut clenched, not for the first time.

“I think I can get most of it,” Wes replied. “But if you wanna come cheer me on…”

“So you can move out just fine, but you needed my help for the move in?”

“That was different.”

“How so?”

“I was lazy.”

She laughed. “And you’re not lazy now?”

“’Course I am. Jus’ happens I have more motivation movin’ out of school than in.”

“Are you gonna miss your roomie?” Savannah asked, lying back on her bed.

“Not as much as you are, I’d wager.”

She rolled her eyes. “I just thought you’d have gotten used to him being there. Or Paige.” She winced, flushing. The P-word was something she rarely brought up during their conversations, as his brilliant girlfriend had been a point of contention when he first went off to college.

“Paige?” The question sounded odd, as though he didn’t know who she was.
